Project Description
Shanti Shelter is a modular-based emergency relief shelter designed to provide comfort and support to individuals affected by natural disasters. Easily assembled and modified, the shelter adapts to its surroundings and the ever-changing needs of its users, creating a safe and protective environment that promotes community bonding and healing.
ISSUE BACKGROUND
A 2023 World Meteorological Organization (WMO) report highlights Asia as the most natural disaster-affected region, flood, storms, and worsening heatwaves causing the most damage. Using World Risk Index data, the report ranks the Philippines, Indonesia, and India as the countries with the highest disaster risk. A solution is needed 10 address this inevitable issue that is happening across the world.
Design Concept
The main concept is a high-performance yet low-tech and sustainable space that could adapt to the challenges occurring in various contexts. Drawing inspiration from the resilience of natural disaster victims, the scalable and replicable architecture is easily accessible and can be assembled by many, while also serving as a safe space for recovery and helping individuals bounce back stronger.
Design Performance
To meet the needs during the recovery process, harvesting technology is incorporated. Solar still water purification is used for arid regions, while fog, rain, and drizzle catchers are implemented in more humid regions. This ensures a reliable and sustainable source of clean water, reducing health crises that often arise during natural disasters.
Glocal Solution
An emergency relief shelter that can be conveniently built by locals using low-tech construction techniques is proposed as a solution to address the global problem. This high-impact solution is not only effective but also universally adaptable, alongside its users and context. It is designed to be environmentally responsible, supporting both the physical and mental well-being of its occupants.
