Project Description

Crowded urban atmosphere, unfavorable environmental conditions and the magnitude of social pressure in the community specifically in Surabaya are factors that cause high levels of stress in today’s society. This problem looks quite insignificant, but has a large impact on the quality of human resources. Responding to the high stress level in today’s society, supporting activities for the inner peace such as yoga and meditation are getting more popular among people in Surabaya. However, these activities are still not supported by conductive environment.

The design of Healing Space provides a place for people to reduce stress levels through various activities and facilities which focused on fulfilling human self-balance and a conductive space ambience. The applied design concept focused on creating a space atmosphere as a safe shelter and detached from the crowded urban atmosphere. Hence, the design created in a form of shelter and nest as a parable of a safe place called Sanctum. Sanctum is a quiet and safety place; a private place where most people are excluded.

Question

Statement

1.

What is your future-proof design concept aiming to solve and how does it benefit the communities and societies around it?

Healing Space is a stress-reducing place for people as a respond to high stress levels that is happening in today’s society specifically in Surabaya, Indonesia. Through this design concept, it will give a large impact on escalating the human resources quality and increasing society’s awareness regarding the issue.

2.

How would you envision the ecological, sociological, and technological aspects that may contribute to the well-being of humanity?

In this design, ecological, sociological, and technological aspects are highly considered. These three aspects work together in creating a like-never-before experience and environment. This design also facilitates community-based activities, where community are involved in handcrafting using sustainable materials and workshop.

3.

What is your design’s impact on the environment based on its concept, materials, maintenance, energy usage and water and waste management?

The design focuses on creating a space with high connectivity between the occupants and nature through the use of natural daylights and ventilations, selected plants all over the building, sustainable materials such as bamboo and rattan, and rainwater harvesting through the roof.

4.

In your opinion, what is the one key component that must exist in future-proof designs?

I personally think that sustainability is an important aspect that should exist in every future-proof design. For decades mankind has built a lot of buildings without considering its impact on the environment. Through sustainability, I believe that the future-proof designs will be more responsible, more mature, and better.

5.

What was your research method like?

The research methods applied consists of three types, literature study through books and articles, interview and direct observation to the field. Through these methods, information and data are collected, filtered, processed, and lastly used as a guide for design development and concept determination.

6.

Who was your main source of information during your research?

During research, people from any ages were the main source of information. Interviewing respondents was an applied method with the most informative data because it is unique and something that cannot be obtained just by reading books or articles. By hearing respondents, the experience, feeling, and pressure can be perceived which gives a more accurate information.

7.

What questions did you consider during your research?

Asking about their conditions and opinion regarding the high stress levels and its causes is a question that is highly considered. With this question, it can lead the conversation during interview process and give one-of-a-kind answers.

8.

Was the research method you used sound?

Literature study from books and articles helped giving basic theoretical information. Interviewing respondents gave additional information which could not be obtained through literature study. Direct observation brought an on-the-spot experience and issues. These three types of research methods worked together in perfecting the obtained data. I personally think that these methods are the basic to make a critical and responsible design.

9.

What did you learn from your research findings?

How high stress levels can impact on someone physically, mentally, and spiritually. And also the solutions for this issue through an approach with natural environment.
