Project Description

“Sandang, pangan, papan” is a well-known Indonesian motto that highlights the fundamental needs of human beings: clothing, food, and shelter. Adequate housing should be accessible to everyone, including marginalized groups like scavengers, who often face harsh living conditions despite their vital role in society. This project seeks to reimagine the lives of TPST Bantargebang scavengers by addressing both their housing needs and environmental challenges. It envisions a system where scavengers can live nomadically, aligning with their way of life-“following waste anywhere it goes”-while being surrounded by environmentally conscious infrastructure. The project aims to provide sustainable, adaptable housing solutions that respect their mobility and integrate green spaces to improve their living conditions.

HOMES FOR WASTE HEROES TPST

Bantargebang is the largest landfill in Indonesia, located in Bekasi, West Java, spanning more than 80 hectares. It receives thousands of tons of waste daily. serving as a critical site for waste management in Greater Jakarta. Scavengers-often marginalized and overlooked by society-play a vital role in collecting and sorting recyclables, cleaning the environment, and also reducing pollution. Despite their essential contributions to sustainability, they face poor living conditions, lacking recognition, support, and adequate housing. As TPST Bantargebang is their source of income, these scavengers who live and depend on it are vulnerable and need immediate solútions for housing. Addressing this problem is crucial for building a more inclusive sustainable waste management system in Indonesia.
