Reverie is interior project of transit space at Gambir station. It is an exploration of surrealism as a method of guiding and evoking place in order to solve an issue of waiting. This project used existing structure to maintain architecture function and identity. Interior intervention created from new program of waiting area and not changing it’s primary flow of train operation system, example given gate, ticket, and train platform. Waiting activity can take many form in facility such as coffee shop, workshop, auditoria, performance stage, restaurant, main circulation, and outdoor space. The event of waiting is no longer conceptualised as a dead period of statis or stilling, or even a slower urban rhythm, but is instead alive with the potential of being other than this (Bissel, 2007).
The Project seeks to question the very nature of reality as the relationship with the art of travel. The project proposes a surreal spatial experience on waiting at Gambir station. The interior architecture is conceived as a reflection of context that brings inside-out on the open space of surroundings. Intervention created void to maximize cross ventilation and daylight as tools of energy savings. Reverie will be able to read the context in holistic point of view and interpret it into a waiting experience that raise people awareness to surrounding culture, tradition, and society.
Gambir station is train station that exist since 1884. After renovation 1992, now the train station operates as long distance train. Taking passenger to city to city in Java island, for example from Gambir station to Surabaya city takes time 9 hours or the shortest time from Gambit station to nearby city such as Bandung takes time 3 hours on the train. On the highest peak of Idul Adha from 15-22 June 2017 registered 122.000 peoples departed from Gambir station (CNN Indonesia) with 760Ha land-use. If transit space doesn’t fulfill the needs of user, the part of waiting can be impact to degrade whole quality of life. The design needs to be carefully to enrich the context. Flows from customer must not disturbed but we can address the waiting experience as the part of journey. Journey itself make the travel become more sensual.
Gambir station located in east of national monument and on the other side there is national gallery. As the national face being the identity in the area. Gambir station as the part of this can not be disarray. As country that rich by the diversity of culture. The hearts of Indonesia has to be culture oriented. On the expressing the culture aspect there is the function of art. While the existing government office as closed city is filling the every gap of central area, there must be a balance for the public to come in. The public should be blend in with the government in order to create the open city. The open city is a bottomup place; it belongs to the people (Sennett,2006). Many area of the education and art has become potential aspect.
Public area should be influenced where people can see the community process. As the transparency grow in the public area, everyone can have the rights to involve as the part of unity. The response in the project is to try to connect these exisiting potential to Gambir station as the wholeness of central area and the Gambir identity itself. Program development based on the complexity of reading context from user needs. The key idea of this program is to provide fastest route to train primary system meanwhile they can access waiting area based on the context response to the site. One unforgettable thing from the transit space is their connectivity with another public transport in order to create livable and sustainable city.
Time is ticking. As people move through space to their destination. The traversed space can has meaning to life. In this living mechanization world people can have easy access to everywhere. Ultimately the needs. Event takes space into account on our everyday life, as we go into higher density problem in the city every year, the space become more and more limited. As the collection of event grow, we ignore our humanity in the process. For example on the habit unconscious way of thinking is that we live by the people told us to do things. The waiting event itself become non-place because they are dead, then we try to escape to our digital world to amuse ourselves. While the ignorance can be created as the environment affect us, we need to be aware to our surroundings to realize there is value that inhabit our lives.
On the travel matter, we anticipate emotion, a place, and phenomenon. We need imagination to destroy the wall of architecture isolation. As we life in the lonely environment where we went to our private digital life. We need enriching our sense of what to look for in a scene, we see sublime to get the different point of view to be aware of surroundings. AYDA ‘Forward’ theme made me realize as designer to look in holistic way, more awareness about whole system can create new definition of design boundaries. Story and place will always closely relate each other to develop human oriented design experience.
